Many tombs in the area where this sculpture was found have been damaged by local farmers or looted by people searching for clay figures to sell. As a result, no ARCHAEOLOGICAL or scientific recorded observations were made when the tombs were opened that would help us better understand their context and cultural meaning. Every tomb discovered so far has been at least partially disturbed. While the search continues for clues to this long-lost culture, we can look to clay figures like this one for some evidence of everyday life and customs among the ancient people of Nayarit.
