Familiar Features, Less Formal
This room features a tented ceiling similar to the one in the upstairs hall and in the downstairs living and dining areas. The woodwork is painted birch, a less formal treatment than the oak on the first floor. Wood trim with a stenciled frieze on the wall above continues as a unifying motif from the first floor. Art-glass windows wrap around the northeast corner, bringing nature inside. The furniture is a reproduction of a painted bedroom suite designed and made in 1909 for the River Forest, Illinois, home of Charles A. Purcell, William's father. The photograph in the room is of Anson Cutts Sr., who purchased the house from Purcell in 1919. next stop >
