A New Vocabulary
The house possesses many Prairie School characteristics based on Sullivan's theories of organic architecture. Its nearly flat roof, as well as the eave that projects seven feet from the front, gives the structure a strong horizontal line, linking it to its site. Purcell and Elmslie's wall of art-glass windows connects the interior of the house to the garden, including the reflecting pool. Bands of windows on the second floor, some spanning more than one interior room, echo this horizontality. next page >
