Pitcher Pitcher

Clara Barck Welles
Kalo Shop

1916

8 x 10 1/4 in. (20.3 x 26 cm)

The Modernism Collection, gift of Norwest Bank Minnesota

Accession #: 98.276.9

Deceptively simple in appearance, this octagonal pitcher was carefully constructed to present a sleek, modern silhouette devoid of decoration. The seams of the eight separate vertical panels are perfectly aligned, with slightly rounded corners, and each panel is smoothly tucked under at the bottom. The handle echoes the geometry of the panels but curves gently inward at the points of attachment, softening the line. The Kalo design recalls the rectilinear vessels of Charles R. Ashbee's Guild of Handicraft and other British Arts and Crafts silvermakers.
