The design on this basket is called a squash-blossom design. A ball in
the center connects to cone shapes, repeated five times to create the
pattern. The squash-blossom design is woven in endless variations, from
the five-blossom arrangement on this basket to very complex designs including
12 blossoms. The design was originally inspired by buttons on the trousers
of Spanish soldiers. It also appears commonly as a form on jewelry.
