Like Surrealism, Calder's work plays off and departs from reality, offering a meta-version of concrete phenomena. Despite his identification with Surrealism the art form, however, the caustic tone of his comment hints at a certain disdain for Surrealism the movement. The current catalog and exhibition seek to reestablish Calder's lineage, examining areas in which his work and interests converge with those of Surrealism.
