Walter von Nessen was the most important modernist lighting designer in the United States. German-born and trained, he established the Nessen Studio in New York City in 1927, four years after immigrating to America. Most of Nessen’s early work came as commissions from architects and decorators, and his designs are characterized by their ingenuity, versatility, and industrial starkness. This lamp shows his preference for combining metallic finishes with such new materials as Bakelite to produce a crisp, functional object reflective of the machine age.
