Paul T. Frankl
American, 1887 - 1958
Skyscraper chair, c. 1927-1930

H. 26 x W. 20 x D. 18 in.

Born in Vienna, Paul Frankl settled in New York City in 1914, where he became an ardent crusader for the modernist movement. In particular, Frankl believed that American furniture should reflect a uniquely American invention—the skyscraper. This chair takes the overall form of the stepped-back office buildings that soared above Frankl’s studio. Similar shapes have been cut out beneath the seat.
