Peter Pfisterer
American, b. 1907
Desk lamp, c. 1935–1940

H. 6 1/4 x W. 13 1/2 in.

After studying architecture in Vienna and working in Switzerland and France, Peter Pfisterer immigrated to the United States in 1933. For the next seven years, he worked with the well-known modern architect Richard Neutra whose dramatic, angular style greatly influenced him. As can be seen here, Pfisterer’s industrial designs are characterized by their geometrical severity and simplicity. Without its walnut base, this desk lamp might seem more at home in a laboratory.
