Bodenvase (Floor vase), 1930

H. 27 x Dia. 15 in.

This floor vase is one of only two in existence by the talented German ceramist Gustav Heinkel. Its hand-drawn geometric designs have been tempered by mists of color that appear to have been sprayed or spattered onto the crackle-glaze finish. The vase was originally acquired by the E. L. King family in the mid-1930s to update their summer home near Homer, Minnesota, overlooking the Mississippi River. The Prairie School architect George Maher had designed the house, called Rockledge, in 1912. Other objects from the house are on view in the museum’s Prairie School gallery.
