Ruba Rombic fishbowl, c. 1928
H. 7 1/2 x Dia. 14 1/2 in.
After seeing French cubist paintings and other modern works at the 1925 Paris Exposition, American designer Reuben Haley created a new line of glass in 1928 that he called Ruba Rombic. Supposedly, the name derives from the word ruba’i, a type of poem, and the word rhomboid, an irregular form with no right angles. This fishbowl was by Haley’s colleague Thomas McCreary, who managed the Phoenix Glass Company in Pennsylvania and made pieces virtually indistinguishable from Haley’s cubist series.
