Ice gun, 1935

H. 6 1/2 x W. 11 x D. 2 3/4 in.

This whimsical ice gun was patterned after the ray guns shown in the 1930s comic strip Buck Rogers. Introduced by the Opco Company in 1935, the ice gun was activated by a spring-loaded trigger and plunger that instantly crushed an ice cube and then shot it through a hole in the bottom. Ice guns like this are extremely rare, suggesting that very few were actually produced. But the proud possessors of these manly playthings must have looked forward to the cocktail hour with considerable delight.
