Using typography for both the text and as a pattern, Herbert Bayer designed this 1927 poster for an exhibition of European applied arts in Leipzig. In 1921, Bayer studied painting at the Weimar Bauhaus with the Russian abstractionist Wassily Kandinsky. From 1925 to 1928, Bayer taught typography at the Dessau Bauhaus, and in 1938, he immigrated to the United States, where he did much to propagate Bauhaus ideas.
