Egg rocking chair, c. 1922
H. 29 1/4 x W. 21 1/4 x D. 42 1/4 in.
For years, this celebrated bentwood rocker was thought to have been designed by Josef Hoffmann and manufactured in Vienna. More recently, however, it is believed that the chair comes from Italy and was made during the 1920s by Antonio Volpe’s firm, Società Anonima. The rocker takes its name from the side ovals, which have been shaped to function as both arms and rockers.
