Friedlander is one of America's most respected photographers, having worked through many genres since the 1950s. He is most known as a photographer of the social landscape, capturing everyday people, places, and things, in the snapshot aesthetic and often with a wry sense of humor. Friedlander's own image often creeps into his pictures, something he realized as early as 1970, when he self-published his first book, Self-Portrait. Subsequently, he has photographed monuments, architecture, trees, flowers, nudes, his wife, and other subjects that often appear in book form. He lives near New York City.
