Art in Bloom

Welcome to Art in Bloom 2013.

MIA Friends of the Institute invite you to celebrate thirty years of fabulous flowers and timeless art during Art in Bloom 2013. Free and open to the public, Art in Bloom exhibits imaginative floral interpretations of selected works of art from the MIA's permanent collection, created by both commercial florists and individual artists, on display from April 25 to 28, 2013.

This year the Art in Bloom signature artwork, Hurdy Gurdy Man (Chrysanthemums), by contemporary artist Jennifer Steinkamp, will be featured. Ms. Steinkamp will help kick off Art in Bloom on opening day, April 25, with a ticketed afternoon presentation in the Pillsbury Auditorium and an evening appearance at Flowers After Hours.

With global nature as the theme, Art in Bloom presents a wide variety of highly anticipated events. The festivities begin with the Preview Party on the evening of April 24. Over the course of the four-day festival, there will be floral demonstrations by Chris Giftos, former event and floral designer from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Ardith Beveridge, local director of education for Koehler and Dramm.

Flowers After Hours on Thursday evening, April 25, and Family Day on Saturday morning, April 27, are free events, featuring musical performances by Madeline Island School of Music and other fun activities. And as always, the Garden Shop will offer tantalizing garden-related merchandise from around the world. Thursday and Friday, box lunches and a formal luncheon are available by reservation. There truly will be something for everyone during Art in Bloom.

Art in Bloom is the principal fund-raiser of the Friends of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. The Friends organization is dedicated to supporting, enhancing, and sustaining the collections, programs, and influence of the MIA. Last year more than 10,000 children were able to participate in educational tours at the museum, many for the first time, thanks to the Friends Children's Fund. This year the Friends will also support an MIA initiative in the African galleries for under-served teenagers. These efforts are in addition to supporting the museum's wonderful collections and exhibitions.

We want to thank all those whose generous support and hard work make this wonderful spring festival possible. Without the dedication of our commercial florists and pedestal floral artists, Art in Bloom wouldn’t be the event we all love and look forward to year after year.

We are grateful for the generous backing from Art in Bloom 2013 Honorary Chair Chichi Steiner, and our many sponsors and patrons. This event has continued to blossom for thirty years because of the countless hours and immeasurable talent contributed by Friends committee members and the MIA staff. We thank them and our numerous volunteers who contribute greatly to the efforts during the four days of Art in Bloom.

Take delight in the scents, sights and sounds of spring at the MIA, and please consider becoming a member of the Friends of the Institute to enjoy its many benefits.

Happy spring!
